Mechanisms

Our timber sash windows are available with two traditional operating mechanisms: spiral balance or cords and weights, offering both modern convenience and classic design.

Spiral Balance

Spiral balance mechanisms offer a modern alternative to the Traditional Cords and Weights method of operation. It is a spring-based counterbalance system that helps you lift, lower and hold the sash window in place.

In each side of the window frame there is a narrow tube containing a spring, which is set to match the weight of the sash. This spring is connected to a sliding component called a pivot shoe, which sits in a vertical track. The sash has small pivot bars that lock into these pivot shoes, so when the sash moves up or down, the shoes and springs move with it.

The springs are pre-tensioned to match the weight of the sash. As you lift the window, the springs unwind slightly while pulling upward, offsetting the sash’s weight so it glides smoothly. When you lower the sash, the springs wind tighter and resist the downward motion, preventing it from dropping. Because the force from the spring and gravity balance each other at different heights, the sash will stay open wherever you leave it.

The benefits of a spiral balance mechanism are it eliminates the need for old-fashioned cords and counterweights. Frames are half the size, allowing you to maximise openings without losing glass area. Good examples of this are narrow bay windows, in dormers , or new build openings. The mechanism is more rigid, allowing improved compression between the sashes and frames, giving improved insulation and noise reduction.

CORDS AND WEIGHTS

Cords and weights are the traditional method for hanging a sash window; they incorporate an authentic pulley and weight-lifting system that has been used in English window design for centuries. Heavy-duty sash cords run over pulleys, providing smooth, balanced operation while remaining true to original construction methods.

This profile is ideally suited to stone or brick properties where the frame work is hidden behind a reveal. Most commonly found in heritage properties and prestigious refurbishment projects. Our cords and weights sliding sash window faithfully preserves the character, proportions, and charm of period architecture, making it particularly suitable for conservation-led schemes, while discreetly integrating modern timber technology, enhanced security, and improved thermal performance for contemporary living.
